AS THE new season nears, so does the desperation among out-of-contract players to find new teams and be part of the plans for the coming campaign.

There are still a number of players whose contracts were not renewed at the end of last season that have yet to be snapped up, among them some individuals with more than 70 Bafana Bafana caps.

There are the players who have featured for the biggest clubs in the country and others, at one stage, viewed as future national team stars.

Veteran goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez has started a training stint with Bidvest Wits, which is becoming a home for players in their mid-30s.

A return there would see the former Bafana gloveman go full circle.

Striker Sibusiso Zuma is still hopeful of a move to Mpumalanga Black Aces, who have not ruled out taking him for the coming campaign but have yet to commit.

Aces are also still in negotiations with yet another former Wits player, defender Sipho Mngomezulu, who impressed on trial but has yet to agree terms.

They do love a "freebie" at AmaZayoni.

Players who have left Aces since the end of last season are midfielder Stanley Kgatla who had some contact with Polokwane City a few weeks ago but that has not yet developed into anything, and Chippa United have also looked at former Bafana left-back Innocent Mdledle, while Clifford Mulenga is reportedly trying his luck with Free State Stars.

Also trying his luck at Ea Lla Koto is former AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates forward Njabulo Manqana.

Mthokozisi Yende, who left Stars at the end of last season, is still looking for a team, while their former winger Mongezi Bobe is hoping for a return to National First Division side Black Leopards.

Experienced winger Delron Buckley is training on his own and has stated his desire to keep playing past his 37th birthday in December.

He left Maritzburg United at the end of last season along with defender Robyn Johannes, who is training with AmaZulu.

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Wits defender Thomas Sweswe, who was not used at all last season by the Clever Boys, is also looking for a new team.
