Katongo no help to Arrows

LAMONTVILLE Golden Arrows owner Mato Madlala and veteran defender Joseph Musonda teamed up to convince Christopher Katongo to join the relegation-threatened outfit, coach Shaun Bartlett revealed yesterday.

But even the presence of the Zambia striker could not help the struggling team to avoid defeat against Mpumalanga Black Aces last night, with the visiters winning 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium to leave Arrows rooted at the bottom of the Absa Premiership.

Katongo, who has been without a club for a year after he abruptly left Chinese side Henan Jianye, this week signed a four-month contract with Arrows, and was thrown straight into the starting line-up last night.

Still, Aces scored a crucial away win, helped by goals from Method Mwanjale and Themba Zwane, while Rudolf Bester netted for Arrows

Katongo, 31, had hinted after winning the Africa Cup of Nations that he wished to end his career in South Africa - a country where he rose to prominence when he played for Jomo Cosmos between 2004 and 2007.

Last night, he came close to opening his account for Arrows when Deon Hotto picked him out inside the box, but his header was saved by Jackson Mabokgwane.

Earlier, Bartlett had expressed his delight at having the experienced goal-poacher in his side.

"It's good to finally have a proven goal-scorer with quality," said Bartlett, the former Bafana Bafana striker.

"The sooner he gets going the better because that's what we have lacked this season.

"We create chances, but we don't have a finisher."
