THE only two South Africans still involved in European club cup competitions will be in action tomorrow with Anele Ngcongca hoping to salvage something from a wretched season.

The Bafana Bafana right-back and Ajax Amsterdam's Thulani Serero are flying the SA flag in the Uefa Europa League, the latter having already excelled in the Champions League this season.

Ngconcga's Genk face a difficult away test at Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in the first leg of their second-round tie, though they do have one significant advantage.

Although Genk's league form in Belgium has been woeful over the last few months, they have at least kept playing and should be match fit and sharp.

The Russian Premier League is on its winter break, meaning Anzhi have not played a competitive fixture since early December. Genk have also dominated in Europe so far this season and are unbeaten in their eight games to date.

Serero is battling a groin strain that forced him to limp out of Sunday's 3-0 Dutch league win over Heerenveen. He may well be rested by coach Frank de Boer as Ajax would be expected to overcome Salzburg, especially if they continue the form they showed in the Champions League where they narrowly finished third in a pool that contained Barcelona and AC Milan.
