Tournament in honour of Speech Ndlovu

THE late Bafana Bafana assistant kit manager and Ekurhuleni soccer administrator, Mandla "Speech" Ndlovu, will be honoured with a development soccer tournament by the Tembisa community from July 8 to 13.

Ndlovu was shot five times by an unknown person or people in his home town a week after returning with Bafana Bafana from the historic 1998 Fifa World Cup finals in France. He died at a later stage.

At the time of his death, Ndlovu was also the president of amateur side Tembisa Santos, which has produced great players like Jerry Sikhosana, Johannes Chilli, Modise Ngwato and Themba Zwane.

"We have decided to use the tournament to recognise the contribution he has made in our township," said Santos in a statement.

"We want to grow the tournament into one of the big sporting events in Gauteng. The support we are getting from the community has been great. We are happy the people of Tembisa have endorsed the tournament."

Sikhosana, who is also a development coach and television analyst, said: "I realised my childhood dream of turning professional because of the efforts by Bra Speech and other officials at Tembisa Santos, he was such a great talent spotter.

"That is why when I'm free, I still go to the grounds and help the youngsters."

The tournament will be played at Ecaleni Grounds 2 and Exubeni Grounds.
