5 guys Usuthu can buy

AMAZULU coach Craig Rosslee will be one of the first to go on a shopping spree for players this January transfer window after admitting the relegation-threatened club "did not buy well" in August.

It is not the two Absa Premiership rookies, as was expected, who are in trouble at this stage of the season, but Usuthu prop up the standings behind one of the new boys, Chippa United, after 16 matches.

While Rosslee, handed the job following the sacking of Roger Palmgren in November, said he would use the lengthy recess due to the Africa Cup of Nations finals to "rebuild" the team, looking for new players is his top priority. The coach said it would be difficult to lure decent players away from their current clubs this month, but said those with limited opportunities will most likely want a change of scenery. We've compiled a list to help the beleaguered coach in his quest to stop the rot at AmaZulu in the second half of the season.

l Mark Mayambela (Orlando Pirates)

The midfielder is frustrated at the defending league champions. He has hardly played for Pirates this season, kicking his heels in the stands and just recently playing reserve league football. He would jump at a new lease of life and could add quality to the Usuthu line-up.

  • S'thembiso Ngcobo (Kaizer Chiefs)

There's just no room for him at Amakhosi now that Bernard Parker, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Kingston Nkhatha are scoring goals in almost every outing. He has always been used sparingly at Chiefs, but throw in Matthew Rusike - who netted his first goal for the club in the last game of 2012 - and Ngcobo is even further down the pecking order. He needs a move.

  • Musa Nyatama (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Who? Yes, that is the forgotten man at Chloorkop after a splendid first half of the previous season under former coach Johan Neeskens. Pitso Mosimane has now taken over and vowed to "give everyone a chance", but the Sundowns midfield is so congested that Nyatama would be lucky to even sit on the bench at this rate.

  • Mbulelo "OJ" Mabizela (Bidvest Wits)

Since he is not in coach Antonio Lopez Habas's plans, he could be an easy snatch for Usuthu. But could Rosslee tolerate the defender's bad boy attitude?

  • Thembinkosi Fanteni (Wits)

He seems to do well everywhere else but in Johannesburg. Maybe a move to the coast could kick-start Terror's ailing career.
