Van Blerk blesses wedding with a win

IN THE absence of in-form Rene Kalmer who is injured, newly wed Irvette van Blerk won the Johannesburg leg of the Spar Ladies series yesterday morning.

Van Blerk, who like Kalmer represented South Africa at the London Olympics in the marathon event, covered the 10km event in 34 minutes and 34 seconds.

Van Blerk, who trains with Kalmer, is now married to South African 400m hurdles star Louis "LJ" van Zyl, who is also a cattle farmer in the Eastern Cape.

Kalmer, who was hoping to achieve a unique record of winning all the five legs of the series, is reported to have sustained an injury on Friday while finalising her preparations for the race.

Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahoro, who won two events in Gauteng last weekend, was second in 35:34 to walk away with a silver medal.

The Johannesburg-based Nyahoro won the half marathon of the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk in Kempton Park last Saturday.

The following day, Nyahoro clinched the inaugural Nike We Run Jozi in Johannesburg. Lebo Phalula finished third in 35:43.

Rene's younger sister, Christine Kalmer, was fifth in 36:15.

Central Gauteng Athletics president James Moloi said they were grateful to all the people who contributed to the success of the race.
