Box-and-dine for Sanders

RODNEY Berman and Jeff Ellis, those philanthropists of note, are at it again. They have staged many tournaments to raise funds for the needy and this time the beneficiaries will be Corrie Sanders's children.

They will present a box-and-dine, black-tie affair on December 3 at Emperors Palace's Centre Court to raise funds for the two children of slain former world heavyweight champion Sanders.

The 46-year-old former WBU and WBO titlist died on September 23 after being shot by armed robbers at a restaurant in Brits, near Pretoria, at a 21st birthday function. Sanders was shot when he dived to protect his daughter Marinique, 15, from oncoming bullets. His son Dean is 12. Sanders's career was guided by Berman while Harold Volbrecht honed his fighting skills.

Ellis and Berman, who, since 2008, have staged their final tournament of the year in early December, saw fit to use this year's event to honour the fallen hero. These tournaments have always been dubbed Christmas Cracker.

Ellis said former two-time IBF junior lightweight champion Malcolm "The Stone" Klassen and former WBF junior featherweight holder Oscar "Golden Boy" Chauke will top the bill with their eight-rounder. These fighters are former stable-mates at the BRD Gym of Manny Fernandez, who still trains Chauke at Wembley Arena, south of Johannesburg. Klassen is with Benny Pailman, Peter Faver and Cliff Martins at Westside Boxing Academy in Westbury. Former SA light heavyweight champion Johnny Muller will make a comeback against Lee Dyer, said Ellis, whose bill will also feature Adam de Moor, Grant Fourie, Koos Sibiya, Joey Stiglingh and Allan Bouwer.

Ellis said tables for 10 will sell for R6000, R5000 and R4000.

"In terms of the auction of the sporting memorabilia, R50000 is guaranteed for Sanders's children," said Golden Gloves publicist Brian Mitchell.

Ellis and Berman have organised similar tournaments for greats including Thulani Malinga, Baby Jake Matlala, Levi Madi, Simon Skosana, Enock Nhlapho and promoter Joe Gumede.
