THE Soweto Football Association has embarked on an educational programme to help preserve the legacy of the late Zodwa Khoza.

Khoza inspired many women to develop an interest in the country's soccer administration as brand manager of Orlando Pirates.

The pioneering daughter of Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza died in 2006 and the Soweto FA has staged a women's soccer tournament in her memory for the past five years.

The Zodwa Khoza Soccer Cup, which features women's clubs from Soweto and other parts of Johannesburg, is held on August 9 to coincide with National Women's Day.

SFA chairman Phil "Chippa" Mogodi said the association had decided to increase participating teams from four to eight this year.

"We want to grow the tournament - there are more teams who have approached us saying they want to be part of the celebrations of Zodwa's contribution to the beautiful game.

"It will still be a one-day tournament.

"As part of the growth of the tournament, we are forming a partnership with the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus.

"We want to see women's soccer also growing and clubs getting financial assistance," said Mogodi, adding that they were grateful to the Khoza family for supporting them.

Zodwa and Kaizer Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung were influential in turning the Vodacom Challenge into one of the biggest off-season tournaments, along with Emmy and Vivian Cassaletti.

High-profile women who entered soccer administration after Khoza include Nonceba Madlala (Golden Arrows), Thandi Merafe (Pirates), Kemiso Motaung (Kaizer Chiefs), Pearl Mosoana (University of Pretoria) and Randzo Sono (Jomo Cosmos).

Last year's tournament was won by Crouses FC.
