THE Molefi Oliphant Institute of Leadership has introduced a life skills training programme that it hopes will assist young soccer players after turning professional.

Oliphant, the former Safa president and current Cosafa executive member, said the programme was a response to the ever-increasing number of professional players who struggle to manage their financial affairs.

"We encourage our soccer players to study for them to have something to fall back on when they retire," Oliphant said.

"It is good to see that players like Bhongolethu Jayiya, Tefu Mashamaite, Jimmy Tau and Katlego Pule are still pursing their studies."

The institute, which is led by Professor Tutu Faleni as its executive director, was launched earlier this year in partnership with the University of North West Vaal campus and Midvaal local municipality.

"We are happy that we had our inaugural certification in Meyerton at the weekend where 250 young people graduated after doing four programmes," Oliphant said.

"The young people attended programmes in leadership, diversity, life skills and entrepreneurship, which included marketing.

"We are talking about Grade 12 graduates who cannot further their studies because of financial constraints or related challenges. It is a three-year programme."
