Cross-country showdown

SOUTH African Schools Athletics will host the national cross-country championships in Mpumalanga tomorrow.

Sasa president Willie Mokatsanyane said the event will take place place the Mbombela Stadium.

The Mbombela local municipality has developed a cross-country facility around the 2010 Fifa World Cup stadium that has also been used by local clubs and provincial structures.

"We will start inside the stadium and go outside before participants come back where they started to finish their respective events," Mokatsanyane said. "All nine provinces will take part in this event, which will see some future South African stars in action. We are going the Kenyan and Ethiopian route to encourage our young athletes to participate in cross-country.

"The support we are getting from the Mbombela municipality for this event is highly appreciated and we urge the community to support us by attending in big numbers."

Some of the top South African athletes who announced their arrival at schools cross-country championships include Khotso Mokoena, Lebo and Lebohang Phalula, Violet Raseboya, Rene Kalmer and Lucky Mohale.

The entrance fee for tomorrow's event is R10 for adults and R5 for juveniles.
