LJ not running on empty

READY: National 400m hurdles champion Louis van Zyl
READY: National 400m hurdles champion Louis van Zyl

ACE South African athlete Louis "LJ" van Zyl does not believe he peaked too early for the world championships that start on Saturday in Daegu, South Korea.

"For me the most important thing is consistency. I have been working very hard this season with the focus on the world championships," Van Zyl said.

He has been in a class of his own since the beginning of the South African track and field season. He smashed the national 400m hurdles record. His time of 47.66 secs at the Yellow Pages Series meeting in Tshwane in February saw him bettering the previous national senior best of 47.81 set by Llewellyn Herbert in 2000.

Van Zyl qualified to compete in the 400m flat too, but opted for his speciality event, saying he has a pretty good chance of winning a medal.

"All that I want to do is to contribute to the success of my country in South Korea. I'm aware many people have put me on the list of potential medallists. The world championships will also form part of my preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.

"Competition will be stiff because all the big names will be there," he said, referring to the likes of the US duo of Angelo Taylor and Kerron Clement, and Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic.
