Mandeya record set straight

BOXING connoisseurs must not read too much into the fight record of Silas Mandeya, who will fight Msizi Qwabe in Durban on Sunday.

According to BoxRec.Com, which keeps boxers' records, the Zimbabwean is yet to win a fight after four losses and two draws.

"That record is wrong. That boxer has forwarded the right one. He has three wins," promoter Thulani Magudulela said yesterday.

Mandeya and Qwabe will be involved in a six-rounder.

Boxing SA's director of operations Loyiso Mtya said there was nothing alarming about the match-up.

"Let us say yes, Mandeya has four losses and two draws, where is the danger there, because Msizi has six wins and a loss and their fight is a six-rounder. I would be worried if they were to fight for a title."

Magudulela's Ludonga Boxing Promotion will stage the fight and seven others at KwaMashu Indoor Sports Centre.

Mandeya's deceptive fight record brings back memories of the brouhaha caused by the sanctioning of Maxwell Awuku to fight Lehlohonolo "Hands of Stone" Ledwaba on November 24 2006. According to BoxRec.Com, Awuku had only four fights but the Ghanaian stopped Ledwaba, the former three-time world champion, in the ninth round.

Ledwaba gave up because of a detached retina. His loss to Awuku was his sixth against 36 wins (23 KOs). Ledwaba retired after that fight in Mahikeng.

Magudulela's other charge, Sicelo Mzobe, will fight Mandeya's compatriot Charles Manyuchi over six rounds . Mzobe has 15 wins and four losses, while Manyuchi has seven wins and two defeats.

Magudulela's development tournaments feature several prospects including Mxolisi Nombewu from Thembisa, who will take on Promise Cabe in the bantamweight division.
