Nzimande set to renew love affair

EAST London fight fans must expect a more polished performance from Godfrey Nzimande on Sunday.

The Gauteng-based fighter from Limpopo, whose skills are honed by respected trainer Nick "Mthakathi" Durandt, will be in East London for the first defence of his South African junior lightweight title.

Nzimande will defend against Eastern Cape fighter Ayanda Yaphi at Orient Theatre where Nzimande stopped Capetonian Thanduxolo Dyani over five rounds in May.

East London fans, who appreciate a good fight irrespective of where a boxer comes from, cheered Nzimande for his prowess.

The boxer was taken aback. He begged promoter Mzimasi Mnguni, who jointly promoted their fight with the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board, to bring him back for his defence.

Mnguni has done just that and Nzimande has promised to up his game this time. He is aware that he was not particularly impressive against Dyani and that could have resulted from the long wait for that fight.

"I've trained extremely hard for this one and I'm ready to punish Ayanda," promised the champion from Namakgale, who is nicknamed "The Punisher".

"The beating will begin from the first round onwards and fight fans from East London who appreciate a good fight will get just what they like most, a good boxing fight."

Nzimande has 13 short-route wins in 21 victories against three losses while Yaphi, who is rated No 1, is relatively inexperienced with nine wins (6 KOs) from nine fights.
