Larsen hunts reinforcements

Former Santos striker Lennox Bacela is on board as their first new recruit. Sowetan can also reveal that Celtic are involved in discussions with Orlando Pirates to either buy striker Siphelele Mthembu outright or extend the loan agreement

AFTER finishing fifth on the Premiership log last season, Bloemfontein Celtic coach Clinton Larsen believes he has laid a solid foundation to challenge for trophies in 2011-12 campaign.

Phunya SeleSele regrouped in Bloemfontein on Monday to kick off their pre-season training programme with Malawian and former Santos striker Lennox Bacela on board as their first new recruit.

Sowetan can also reveal that Celtic are involved in discussions with Orlando Pirates to either buy striker Siphelele Mthembu outright or extend the loan agreement.

Larsen, who has also played for Bafana Bafana, Manning Rangers and Pirates, wants to add more quality into the team to have a bigger pool of players in his squad.

"We have top quality international players from Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria coming in the next two weeks for assessment by the technical staff," Larsen said.

"We will sign them if we are impressed and we are looking for a better finish than position five next season. If we can better our performance, there is no reason why we can't push for higher honours."

Celtic are also expected to sign Nkosinathi "Chippa" Nhleko sometime this week after Kaizer Chiefs decided not to retain the burly forward.

"We have agreed in principle with Celtic and it's a matter of time before Chippa signs the contract," said Nhleko's manager Thabo Moloto.

Larsen, on the other hand, has off-loaded well-travelled Gary Goldstone, Michael Khaile and Dino Ndlovu.

Celtic communications director Sello Nduna said: "Our coach and his technical staff are doing a great job to ensure that the team is razor-sharp this season."

Meanwhile, Celtic will play an international friendly against Zimbabwean giants Highlanders in a Challenge Cup match at Ellis Park Stadium on July 9. Tickets are available at Computicket at R30 for adults and R10 for students. Grandstand tickets are R50.
