University gives Bay a venue

BAY United's venue woes are over after the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University's (NMMU) stadium was named to host their Premier Soccer League promotion clash against Jomo Cosmos on Saturday.

On Monday, after the announcement that Bay United would host the first leg of the two-leg play-off, Umlilo were left frustrated after finding themselves without a ground after the Gelvandale Stadium was said to be not available as it was hosting the Mayoral Cup.

It emerged yesterday that Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Zanoxolo Wayile had ordered the Mayoral Cup to be postponed to accommodate Umlilo in Gelvandale but the move was too late as the club had already secured an agreement with NMMU.

"We will play the match at NMMU and nothing will change that," said Umlilo's general manager Lungsi Mooi yesterday. "The university accommodated us and we will not ditch them."

The date for the first leg of the play-offs was initially scheduled for May 18, but after realising the date would clash with local government elections, the PSL changed it.

Umlilo officials approached the municipality several weeks ago hoping to convince them to postpone the Mayoral Cup, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
