Platinum Stars add to Habas' woes

ANTONIO Lopez Habas' future as Mamelodi Sundowns coach remains in doubt as the club's supporters have called for his head.

The Spaniard's troubles were deepened yesterday as the Brazilians were held to a 1-all draw by Platinum Stars.

Dikwena were the first to score through Joseph Molangoane with only four minutes remaining before the interval and Sundowns' goal was scored by Zimbabwean striker Nyasha Mushekwi in the 59th minute.

In the midst of all the trouble the Brazilians find themselves in, with star players going AWOL and the supporters now turning not only on on the coach but also on team manager Kenneth Makhanya, they could have done with a win.

Chants of "uHabas asi' mfune thina" (we don't want Habas) and "kajeko re koba motho" (we're gonna fire somebody today) rang out at the beginning of the second half. But the supporters' feelings about the coach aside, there was simply nothing he could do as his charges missed chance after chance in front of the Stars goal.

Franklin Cale, whose shooting for the most part left a lot to be desired and who was later substituted for Richard Henyekane, drew a superb save from Dikwena goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini on the 17th minute from a free-kick just outside the 18-yard area.

With Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane in attendance, Cale's poor shooting didn't do his chance of getting a call-up for next week's match against Burkina Faso any good.

Sundowns were dominant but Stars also created and in the 23rd minute, after a brilliant Reuben Thebakang cross, Henrico Botes outjumped the hosts' defence but his header went over the bar.

Kapini was the busiest of the two keepers and twice saved from Nyasha Mushekwi in the space of two minutes. With Sundowns' strikers missing inviting chances, Stars seized the opportunity when Molangoane caught their defence sleeping and beat the offside trap to put his side ahead. Sundowns finally levelled matters in the 59th minute when Mushekwi's diving header found the back of the net from Elias Pelembe's cross.
