Downs back in stride

JUST when questions were being asked about their championship credentials, Mamelodi Sundowns showed exactly why they were strong favourites to win the league championship this season.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs last week, questions were asked whether they had what it takes to win the league.

On Saturday against Maritzburg United at Lucas Moripe Stadium, Downs answered their critics with an impressive 3-0 win that solidified their log lead.

They have 30 points.

After a goalless first half, the hosts came out blazing and goals from midfielders Franklin Cale, Matthew Pattison and striker Katlego "Killer" Mphela ensured that they took all the points.

Coach Antonio Lopez Habas, who came under fire for his selections in their defeat against Chiefs, was understandably happy with the performance, which has pumped them up for Wednesday's away game against Bloemfontein Celtic.

"We scored some good goals in the second half and I am generally happy with how the guys played," Habas said. Sundowns lead second-placed Ajax Cape Town by three points.
