Entries for 2011 Comrades Marathon close at 18,000

IF YOU are still thinking of registering to compete in the 2011 Comrades Marathon, forget it.

IF YOU are still thinking of registering to compete in the 2011 Comrades Marathon, forget it.

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) announced that they reached the limit of 18,000 entries by midday yesterday.

Runners who had posted their entry forms by close of business yesterday, and that had been postmarked by the Post Office, would still be accepted.

CMA director Johan van Staden said they will release the official entry figure for next year once all the entries have been received and captured on the system.

The Ultimate Human Race received a boost after obtaining official recognition by the Guinness World Records as being the world's biggest ultra-marathon.

This was a result of 14343 runners making it to the finish line within the 12-hour cutoff time in the Comrades 2010 run, which took place in May because of the 2010 World Cup.

Comrades 2011 will be an "up run" from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on May 29, starting outside the Durban City Hall at 5.30am and ending at the Cricket Oval in Pietermaritzburg.

"We have unfortunately had to cap the number of participants in next year's 86th running of the Comrades Marathon," Van Staden said. "This is mainly due to us wanting to ensure the health and safety of all competitors in the ultra-marathon and set the pace for a good race.

"Essentially, it is the runners who make the Comrades Marathon the attraction that it is today. We salute you and look forward to wishing you well at the start of next year's run. We wish you all the best in your qualifying marathon."

Top South African runners taking part in the marathon include Ludwick Mamabolo, Fusi Nhlapo, Walter Nkosi, Farwa Mentoor, Mluleki Nobanda and Butitjie Jantjies.
