Unstable cops

Seldom does it cross our minds that things can sometimes go wrong when we turn to police for help.

For one Durban family things did go awry - and horribly so, when police allegedly assaulted a drunk, troublesome relative to restrain him.

That their son subsequently landed in hospital with serious assault wounds and died is an unintended consequence that has left the family with a huge sense of guilt and bitterness at the police's alleged excess and brutality.

The family's confidence in the SA Police Service has been shattered by the tragedy - moreso for being the unwitting witnesses of unnecessary use of force in a petty case of domestic squabble.

When the police break the very law they are supposed to uphold, this demonstrates their own lack of confidence in the law to resolve a culture of impunity within their own ranks.
