Sound lesson

THE uprisings in Egypt and Yemen should be a lesson to all leaders that no one can stop the will of the people.

Just like in Tunisia, the people have come out to say enough is enough. They can no longer brook the misrule by individuals driven by a hunger for power and self-enrichment.

What the uprisings are also telling us is that good leaders are those who are willing to relinquish power in the name of democracy.

Those who fail to learn from this will eventually come to face the essence of people's power.

This should be a lesson, especially to African leaders who tend to cling to power, while projecting themselves as saviours who can deliver their people from the evils of neo-colonialism and poverty.

What they must learn is that the essence of democracy is the people's ability to choose who should govern them.
