A huge new year tragedy

NEW YEAR'S festivities are about merriment, celebration, fun, joy and happiness.

Every year in December all over the world people find ways and places to be happy with family, friends and loved ones as they say goodbye to a passing year, welcoming the new one.

So, while thousands flocked to the beaches of KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and others around the country on New Year's Day, celebrations in North West were marred by the tragic deaths of 10revellers at a tavern.

By yesterday police in the province were still unable to say what had led to the horrific stampede at a popular tavern at Ipelegeng township outside Schweizer-Reneke.

The bodies of the 10 dead revellers, estimated to be aged between 18 and 25 years, were discovered by the police at about 2am on Saturday - a mere two hours into the new year.

We can only hope the police do a thorough job to establish the cause of the stampede that led to this sad end to young human lives.

This was probably unexpected since normally around that time the primary focus is on the roads.

We agree with the provincial government in calling for a thorough investigation into the tragedy.

We also join the government and the community in sending our heartfelt condolences to the affected families andrelatives over the loss of their loved ones.
