It's not policing

IF a top cop can mislead the nation like head of the Hawks Anwar Dramat, then the mistrust in the police can only be fuelled.

Only last month Dramat told Parliament's standing committee on public accounts that the Hawks had reopened the probe into an alleged R450 million bribery in the Arms Deal.

Yesterday he changed his tune, telling us he had finally closed the probe. No explanation.

The R50 billion Arms Deal signed in 1998 has raised such a stink that claims of impropriety have been levelled at luminaries like former president Thabo Mbeki and President Jacob Zuma had charges against him dropped only last year.

ANC bigwig Tony Yengeni was the fall guy: charged and found guilty while colleagues have not been touched despite mountains of claims against them.

If a top cop cannot see the smoke, then he can't expect us to trust his constables.
