Authorities in Gambia ordered the closure of two leading newspapers for being "critical" of President Yahya Jammeh.
The move comes less than a month after the same authorities ordered the closure of a private radio station.
The Standard, a daily newspaper, and The Daily News, a tri-weekly paper were told to close by the widely feared National Intelligence Agency.
"Three officers in plain clothes visited our office this afternoon and told us that they have directives from the Office of The President for us to close down with immediate effect," Lamin Njie, editor of The Daily News told AFP.
"We will go ahead with our publication unless they inform us through writing and not verbally," he added.
"I was told by my staff that three officers in plain clothes came to my office asking for me but whether they ordered for us to close down, I am yet to hear," the Publisher of The Standard, Sheriff Bojang told AFP.
