Iran frees US woman after R3,5m bail

MUSCAT - American Sarah Shourd was resting yesterday in Oman's capital Muscat on her first full day of freedom after a surprise bail deal with Iran secured her release after more than 13 months in custody.

US and Omani officials say it's unclear how long Shourd will stay in Oman with her mother or whether she will seek immediate medical attention.

The 32-year-old woman was freed on Tuesday after Oman mediated a deal for R3,548 million bail.

The Omani officials spoke on condition of anonymity yesterday because they are not authorised to brief media.

Shourd thanked Oman after arriving, but has stayed out of the public eye since.

Shourd and two other Americans were detained along Iran's border with Iraq in July 2009 and accused of spying.

The two men remain in a Tehran prison.
