Duarte celebrates Nkandla being ‘back in hands of the ANC’

Jesse Duarte was pleased that 10 out of 13 municipalities counted are in African National Congress (ANC) hands.

In an early interview with Radio 702 on Thursday‚ Duarte‚ the party’s deputy secretary-general‚ said that the ANC was happy to be holding its ground.

“I’m pleased that the president won his ward. Not him himself‚ but Nkandla is back in the hands of the ANC and I think the media were making a great deal about that‚” Duarte said.

“I suspect that some people were hoping that Nkandla would go to the DA‚ but it didn’t‚ and right now we have a total out of 13 municipalities that have been counted‚ and we have 10 of those in our hands‚” said Duarte.

The results for Nkandla had not‚ however‚ been independently confirmed at the time of publication.

Duarte also celebrated that the ANC had regained Ward 29 in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“We had won it some years back‚ we’ve regained it‚ and the DA asked for a recount three times. I’m very pleased about that‚” said Duarte.

Duarte said that she is proud to say that the local government elections were calm‚ free and fair.

“We spoke to some international observers yesterday‚ who echoed that sentiment‚” she said.

Duarte also described the election atmosphere she observed in Soshanguve on Wednesday.

“I want to say‚ I drove around Soshanguve last night‚ and I was so proud of South Africa. I was so proud to be a citizen in a country where people were standing in long queues‚ in icy cold weather waiting to vote patiently… for me that’s a sign of a democracy that’s indeed maturing‚” she said.
