Coligny murder accused have no means to evade trial‚ court finds

The two men accused of the murder of a teenager in Coligny‚ have put out a case that may be sustained during trial‚ the Magistrate’s Court has found.

Handing down judgment in a bail application on Monday‚ Magistrate Magaola Foso said Pieter Doorewaard‚ 26‚ and Phillip Schutte‚ 34‚ were first offenders and had no pending cases.

The men are accused of murdering Motlhomola Mosweu. They claim he jumped off the back of a bakkie while they were taking him to the police station for stealing sunflowers from a field.

The court found that there is no evidence the men could be harbouring resentment for any person.

“Both were born and bred in Coligny and have been residents of this town for the rest of their lives…”

“The accused persons have passports and have offered to hand them over to the police‚” Foso said.

Foso said the amount of R20‚000 the men had offered to borrow to pay for bail is more than reasonable. “This should serve a clear indication that they want to stand trial. They have put out a version which may be sustained during the trial‚” he said.

He granted them bail of R5‚000 and commented the men‚ who work on a farm‚ have no means to evade trial.
