Olievenhoutbosch residents march against corruption

More than 1‚000 residents of the Olievenhoutbosch township in Centurion took to the streets early on Monday morning as part of a march against what they call corruption and a lack of service delivery in the area.

Solomon Thabatha‚ who said he was a local leader‚ told Times Live the community’s anger centred around the allocation of RDP housing.

A woman was photographed carrying a sign that read “Stop Selling our Houses”.

According to the resident‚ some people were still waiting for housing after first being signed up to a waiting list in 1996‚ while others have been given homes by allegedly paying officials to skip the queue.

A short while ago‚ police asked the marchers to extinguish burning tyres blocking the R55‚ saying it was damaging the road surface.

The marchers obliged. However‚ the road remains blocked with a variety of barricades under the watchful eyes of a large police presence.

The marchers are awaiting the arrival of a provincial government official to receive their memorandum.

Meanwhile‚ the section of the R55 running past Olievenhoutbosch remains closed to traffic.
