Uber launches food delivery app UberEats in Joburg

Global ride-hailing service Uber is branching into the food business in South Africa with the local launch on Thursday of its food delivery platform‚ UberEats.

Initially available in Johannesburg‚ the online food delivery platform will see users have restaurant-prepared delivered to their doorsteps.

Uber Johannesburg Driver Operations and Logistics Manager Dave Kittley said Johannesburg was the first city to launch the product in Africa following the success of of Uber’s taxi service in the city.

“We have been delivering people around cities for years and we know how cities work and now it’s time to take all those lessons learned and apply them‚” Kittley said‚ adding that the company was looking to spread into other businesses too.

UberEats launched in Toronto‚ Canada‚ in December last year and has since branched into four continents and more than 22 cities.

UberEats users will be required to download a separate app from the Uber taxi app and use thier existing login details to place an order.

Users will log on to the app and order their food which will be prepared by the restaurant before an Uber courier collects the meal from the restaurant and delivers it the user.

Users will be able to track their orders through the app.

Kittley said UberEats is also a platform for its current drivers to earn more skills and expand their revenue.

“Opportunities were advertised to existing driver partners to be part of UberEats and those that were able to apply will be part of this and others will be able to join. This will always help them expand their revenue‚” Kittley said.

UberEats has partnered with over 85 restaurants locally and will add more‚ including fast food outlets in the future.

There is a minimum fixed fee of delivery fee of R20.
