The North West University (NWU) has shut down its Mahikeng campus indefinitely follwing #FeesMustFall protests that started on Tuesday.

On Thursday‚ some students who received SMSes on Tuesday instructing them to leave the campus were seen going home‚ but others refused to go.

They said they were against the announcement by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande of an 8% cap on tuition fee increases for the 2017 academic year.

But campus student representative council (SRC) deputy president Rebaone Pudi said they were not supporting the protest.

“When people strike they do not have a clear objective. That is why the SRC doesn’t support the strike. From the beginning we made it clear that as the SRC we cannot associate ourselves with things that can be dealt with in a boardroom‚” Pudi said.

He added that they were engaging with university management to make sure that the fee increases do not exceed the 8% cap announced by Nzimande.

“Our main concern‚ for now‚ is to make sure that the fee increases do not exceed 8% and that the campus must re-open by Monday. We will be under pressure‚” he said.

NWU spokesman Koos Deganaar said the campus would remain shut down until October 9. “We have requested every student to vacate the campus for their own safety‚” he said.
