Police reservist accused of raping woman in jail cell

A police reservist is facing criminal charges after he allegedly raped a woman in police holding cells at Lenasia police station, south of Johannesburg, last week.

The 33-year-old man allegedly offered the woman two options: to pay him R500 or to have sex with him in exchange for her release, both of which she declined. The woman was arrested for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) acting spokesman Robbie Raburabu confirmed the matter had been reported, but could not give details relating to the woman's arrest.

He said an investigation was instituted after the woman reported the matter following her court appearance.

"Investigators were called to the scene and while they were busy processing the scene, the suspect was positively identified by the victim and he was placed under arrest," Raburabu said.

The woman, who cannot be identified because of the nature of the crime , has since been released from custody.

Raburabu could not say whether she was released on bail or on a warning, but said that she appeared in Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini referred inquiries to Ipid, and would not comment on the woman's arrest.
