Local government election fever has died down‚ and now political parties must clean up the streets which are littered with their election posters or face fines.
On seemingly almost every street pole on the streets of three major cities‚ Johannesburg‚ Cape Town and Durban‚ which witnessed fierce campaigns from political parties‚ there is an election poster.
eThekwini spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said all political parties have 30 days after elections to take down the posters.
“All parties must remove all posters and flying banners within 30 days of the local government elections‚” said Mthethwa.
“Failure to comply would normally result in the municipality removing the posters and recovering costs incurred from the party at the rate of R50 per poster and the deposits made will be forfeited to the municipality.”
City of Cape Town spokesperson Priya Reddy said parties have 10 days after the elections in which to remove their posters.
“Political posters referring to the elections may be erected 11 weeks before the election and must be removed 10 days thereafter‚” she explained.
Joburg metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the officers were waiting for a directive from the city to start removing the posters.
“In terms of procedure ‚ the city will indicate to the JMPD when the time is right to start removing the political posters‚” said Minnaar. – TMG Digital
