Couple nabbed for R4.8m cattle fraud

A couple have been arrested in connection with cattle fraud amounting to about R4.8 million.

Daniel Smit‚ 48‚ and his wife Elizabeth Smit‚ 46‚ were arrested by the Hawks on Thursday following their alleged collaboration in defrauding more than seven cattle farm owners in Choligny‚ North West Province‚ said Hawks spokesman Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso.

“The pair is alleged to have gone to cattle farm owners in and purchased cattle and fodder then used cheque as a means of payment. The unsuspecting farm owners accepted the cheques only to later discover that they had been played – all the cheques bounced.

“The couple was arrested and have appeared before the Lichtenburg Regional Court where they were each released on R50‚000 bail. On 17 — 19 October 2016 the suspects will appear again at the same court for a formal trial‚” Rikhotso said.
