There were noticeably fewer supporters than normal for Paralympian Oscar Pistorius as he appeared for sentencing at the North Gauteng High Court.

Pistorius’ appearances have in the past attracted major attention‚ including the attendance of socialites‚ politicians other well-known people‚ but only about a dozen supporters pitched up on Wednesday.

Tswane metro police officers were largely visible on Madiba Street‚ which for previous appearances was closed off to traffic‚ but on Wednesday remained open.

Die-hard supporters carried posters saying “Oscar suffered enough” and “Give Oscar his freedom back please“.

“We have been very supportive of Oscar since the trial started and even today we are here to say to the judge please forgive Oscar‚” one supporter said.

Pistorius was arrested on Valentine’s Day 2013 for shooting his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door.

Steenkamp’s parents Barry and June were seen entering the court earlier. Pistorius’ uncle Arno and his brother Carl were also present in court.

Oscar Pistorius trial demonstrates mothers' ability to overlook their sons' flaws

“We are mothers‚ grandmothers and the love we have for Oscar is a genuine‚ sympathetic love for a decent young man.”

These are the words of Dawn Hasset‚ one of the women who have been supportive of convicted Paralympian Oscar Pistorius‚ who is due to be sentenced by the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Hasset and other women from around the world have gathered outside court in Pistorius’s previous appearances to show their unwavering support for him.

Psychologists say these mothers support Pistorius because they put themselves in his parents’ shoes.

“They imagine how it will be like if something like this happens to their sons.

“A mother will love their child through their imperfections‚” psychologist Ilze Alberts said.

Another psychologist‚ Kyla Edinburg‚ agrees with Alberts‚ adding that these mothers are thinking about their own children.

“A child is a reflection of their parents. They are an extension of them.

“It is hard for them [parents] to accept their children may be doing wrong‚” Edinburg said.
