Walk open season on the tax payer

The taxman took to the busy streets of Pretoria’s central business district on Friday to mark the opening of the tax season.

More than 1 200 South African Revenue Service employees‚ lead by SARS commissioner Tom Moyane‚ set out on a route of 11.75km‚ which symbolises the country’s revenue target of R1‚175-trillion – and aims to demonstrate that the receiver of revenue is fit and ready.

“Tax season has grown into an important partnership between government and taxpayers‚ who make a vital contribution to our country’s tax system‚” SARS said. “It represents the single biggest annual engagement between SARS and taxpayers‚ when more than four million taxpayers submit their income tax returns.”

Along the route SARS staff spoke to the public about who was eligible to pay tax.
