Ex-cop charged with impersonating prosecutor to earn R21‚000 bribe

A former police reservist has been charged with fraud and corruption after allegedly impersonating a prosecutor in an attempt to extort a bribe.

Abraham Jacobus Visagie‚ 39‚ appeared in Springbok Magistrate’s Court and was released on R2‚000 bail‚ Northern Cape Hawks spokesman Captain Philani Nkwalase said on Wednesday.

His alleged offence was committed at the same court in December 2015.

“He approached a 54-year-old woman facing a possible charge of culpable homicide‚ promising to protect her against prosecution‚” said Nkwalase.

“He further demanded R6‚000 for himself and an additional R15‚000 for his associates who would assist on the case. The investigation ensued soon after the matter was reported to the Hawks.”

The case was postponed to July 21.
