Police are monitoring the situation in Bapong near Brits in North West after violent protests in the area which caused the N4 to have to be closed for several hours on Friday.

Police in the province tweeted on Saturday morning that the N4 had been reopened and was safe to travel on again after protesting residents blockaded the freeway in both directions with burning tyres on Friday.

Police said a truck had been set alight and that eight cars had been pelted with stones.

It is not clear why the residents were protesting.

Meanwhile‚ Congress of the People (COPE) said on Saturday it had had numerous calls from people in Swartruggens west of Rustenburg‚ informing the party that the town‚ which is also situated in North West‚ was in lockdown.

“Entrances and exits are blocked and part of the town is in flames‚ COPE spokesman Dennis Bloem quoted residents as saying.
