Oscar Pistorius family business to appear before Competition Tribunal

Convicted Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s family business will appear before the Competition Tribunal on Thursday over claims of price-fixing.

The family business H Pistorius & Co‚ along with its rivals in the fertiliser industry and the Fertilizer Society of South Africa‚ will appear before the competition tribunal over claims that they were part of a 13-year price-fixing racket.

The companies want the case kicked out on technical grounds. They claim that the Competition Commission filed its complaint late.

H Pistorius & Co was started by Oscar’s grandfather Hendrik in 1944 and became one of Africa’s largest producers of agricultural lime‚ or aglime — the key product used to improve the quality of fertiliser. The company is the backbone of the family’s wealth‚ according to the UK Daily Mail.

Hendrik‚ now 98‚ still chairs the company. “He’s exceptionally sharp of mind‚” says the company’s MD‚ and Hendrik’s son‚ Leo.

Last year‚ it was reported that the Competition Commission favoured an administrative penalty of 10% of the company’s turnover over the period of the alleged price-fixing‚ related to the fixing of agents commissions.
