MP and former African National Congress Youth League president Mlungisi “Lulu” Johnson said he is “being guided by circumstances” and is yet to appoint an attorney as he faces charges of driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving.

At his last appearance in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court in March‚ the case was postponed for blood test results and for Johnson to appoint an attorney.

When magistrate Este Petzer asked Johnson on Tuesday why he still had no legal representative‚ he replied that he has seen no need to appoint anyone yet.

“I am being guided by circumstances. I have not seen a reason to appoint an attorney as we are still waiting for the blood test results‚” said Johnson.

Johnson was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving shortly after midnight on March 13‚ when his Mercedes-Benz crashed head-on with Nelson Mandela Bay economic development executive director Anele Qaba’s BMW.

Qaba was also arrested‚ but was not in court with Johnson. Qaba’s whereabouts have not been established.

Petzer told Johnson that she understood his standpoint‚ but said he will have to be represented by an attorney at his next court appearance.

The case was postponed until July 29.

Petzer also said this would be the last postponement for the blood results. Should the results not be ready on July 29‚ the case will be provisionally withdrawn.
