EgyptAir plane hijacked by one person, about 60 on board-sources

One person hijacked an EgyptAir plane that was heading from Alexandria to Cairo and diverted to Cyprus on Tuesday, civil aviation and police sources said.

The sources said there were about 60 people on board.

A passenger with a suicide belt threatened the pilot of a hijacked EgyptAir plane that was diverted to Cyprus on Tuesday, the Civil Aviation Ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said pilot Omar al-Gammal had informed authorities that he was threatened by a passenger who possessed a suicide belt and forced him to land in Larnaca.

The hijacker who forced an EgyptAir flight heading to Cairo from Alexandria to land in Cyprus is thought to be strapped with explosives, Cyprus broadcaster CYBC said on Tuesday.

The airplane was parked at an apron at Larnaca airport. The hijacker asked police to back away from the aircraft, the broadcaster said.

UPDATE:

EgyptAir hijacker ‘frees all on board except four foreigners, crew’

A hijacker who diverted an EgyptAir flight to Cyprus on Tuesday has released everyone on board except four foreign passengers and the crew, the airline said on Twitter.

The company had earlier tweeted that five foreigners and the crew remained on board, after negotiations with the hijacker who commandeered the domestic flight to Larnaca airport.
