Gender equality commission to monitor alleged sexual harassment case against Fransman

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) says it will monitor the case of alleged sexual harassment involving ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman‚ which it is concerned about.

It said it was aware that at this stage‚ it was a mere allegation yet to be tested in a court of law and that Mr Fransman enjoyed the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

“At the same time the CGE has a strong constitutional mandate to protect the right to gender equality‚ and ensure that the rights of women are observed‚ upheld‚ respected and protected‚” it added.

It said that sexual misconduct and abuse of women remained a scourge far too common in the workplace and elsewhere in society.

“In fulfilling its constitutional mandate to uphold the right to gender equality‚ the CGE looks to leaders within political parties‚ traditional leadership structures‚ faith based organisations‚ civil society organisations and our communities to uphold these constitutional values‚ and to help us combat the abuse of women and young girls. We especially trust our leaders to take the lead in the fight against gender based violence and sexual harassment‚” the commission said.

“The CGE will be monitoring this and other similar cases of allegations of sexual harassment to ensure that the law takes its course‚” it added.
