Residents of South Africa’s two major cities‚ Johannesburg and Cape Town‚ were caught up in opposite weather extremes on Thursday – flooding and fires.

Weather South Africa ?@WeatherSA issued an alert warning: “Multiple reports of flooding in parts of eastern Johannesburg. Bedfordview area particularly affected”.

The flooding affected traffic on the N3/N12/R24 in all directions‚ at Gilloolys Interchange‚ causing heavy delays.

Rob Byrne ?@TrafficSA tweeted: “Avoid: Gilloolys Interchange — Flooding Heavy queues on N3 South‚ N12 West and R24 West — N3 North slow from Geldenhuis”.

In Cape Town‚ residents along Contour and Mountain roads on the Southern Peninsular were asked to evacuate in a precautionary measure due to a raging veld fire on Elsies Peak.

Earlier on Thursday‚ an unidentified body was found in a train carriage damaged by the fire in Glencairn. No further details were immediately available.

Emergency workers contained the fire near the train tracks but the mountain fire was still burning in the afternoon‚ fuelled by strong winds and blanketing Glencairn and nearby Fish Hoek in heavy smoke.

The South African Navy helped contained the fire near the railway line‚ as it lies between the mountain and the sea. “A unique way of fighting land-based fire — Navy Tug Boats went to assist with the Glencairn train & mountain fire‚” VWS Wildfires @vwsfires tweeted.

Yesterday‚ about 200 firefighters were called in as a blaze raged through Simonsberg wine farms.
