The Democratic Alliance (DA) will on Wednesday register its misgivings about the R73-million in bonuses paid to Eskom executives over the past eight years.
The party’s public enterprises spokesperson‚ Natasha Mazzone‚ will be submitting a petition “regarding the payment of executive ‘performance’ bonuses since load shedding commenced in 2008” at power utility’s Megawatt Park headquarters.
“Load-shedding‚ driven by the mismanagement of Eskom‚ continues to be an ever-present threat to economic growth and job creation‚” she said.
“The DA will not tolerate that Eskom’s top brass earn exorbitant salaries while ordinary South Africans suffer from an unstable electricity supply.”
The DA’s action comes two days after Eskom executives faced tough questions from the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa)‚ which questioned them about whether the company had properly considered the effect on the economy of its proposed 16.6% tariff increase for 2016‚ should this be granted.
Nersa is holding hearings into Eskom’s application to claw back unanticipated costs from the 2013-14 financial year using a mechanism called the revenue clearing account.
Eskom has applied to claw back R22.8-billion‚ which would amount to an 8.6% additional increase on top of the 8% already approved for 2016.
