Suspect arrested with abalone in Western Cape

The swift action of police officers attached to the Western Cape Flying Squad led to the arrest of a 53-year-old man for the illegal possession of abalone with an estimated value of R200‚000.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut said that police received information on Friday evening about a vehicle transporting abalone illegally from Hawston and while patrolling the N2 near Harare in the Khayelitsha area the white LDV was spotted and stopped.

The man was found to be in possession of 4‚289 pieces of abalone‚ he said.

The suspect will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
