South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West Province on Monday condemned the impending removal of Afrika Thale as the mayor of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

In 2013 the African National Congress (ANC) in North-West suspended Thale for three years for allegedly defying the organisation. He was asked not to accept his nomination contrary to the list provided by the provincial executive committee. Thale refused to vacate his office.

“We view such baseless actions as irresponsible‚ divisive and a clear attempt to dispense patronage at the expense of service delivery to our communities‚” SANCO provincial chairperson Paul Sebegoe said.

Sebegoe questioned why no action was being taken against other municipalities riddled with corruption.” Councillors in Tlokwe Municipality were removed for passing a motion against an ANC mayor. We are calling for consistency in dealing with anarchists who are colluding with opposition parties to remove mayor Thale‚” he said.

He said SANCO condemned any action against any mayor or municipal official without following due process as it had the potential to destabilise municipalities ahead of the 2016 local government elections.

“Such divisive actions which are being carried out without a performance review‚ following disciplinary processes or consultation with alliance partners and community representatives undermine voters who put the ANC in power in that municipality‚” said Sebegoe.
