DA to lay charges against two members of World Cup bid committee

The Democratic Alliance says it will on Monday lay fraud and corruption charges against two members of the 2010 Soccer World Cup Bid Committee and the Local Organising Committee.

The charges are related to an alleged $10 million bribe paid to the Confederation of North‚ Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

DA spokesman on sport Solly Malatsi said the charges will be laid at the Cape Town police station.

“The 2010 World Cup will remain one of South Africa’s shining achievements but it is vitally important to hold those guilty of corruption to account and that a clear message is sent to those who seek to tarnish South Africa though corrupt activities‚ that they will not be allowed to get away with it‚” Malatsi said.

He added that South Africans should not have to wait for answers from international investigations when officials accountable to them should be telling them the truth.
