Cedric Frolick‚ the chairman of the parliamentary committee into Police Minister Nathi Nhleko’s report on President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla residence‚ says he is “shocked” at the state of the buildings at the residence.
Speaking in the pouring rain outside the complex after an on-site inspection of the estate in KwaZulu-Natal‚ Frolick said it was clear that Zuma was “not secure” or “comfortable” on the estate which cost taxpayers more than R250m to upgrade.
“We can’t understand why such an amount of money was spent‚” he said‚ referring to the more than R100m used to build barracks.
“Barracks cannot be security upgrades‚” he added.
The inspection is part of the committee’s efforts to decide whether or not Zuma should pay back some of the money spent as ordered by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
Nhleko’s report said that Zuma should not pay‚ but opposition MPs said that the minister’s report had no standing and should be ignored in favour of Madonsela’s findings.
