Port Elizabeth metropole's leaders safe‚ for now

EXTRAVAGANT: President Jacob Zuma

A much expected leadership reshuffle in Nelson Mandela Bay — which would have seen Port Elizabeth gets its fourth mayor in just six years — was put on hold today (04/05/15).

The ANC announced that President Jacob Zuma and his team would be back in the city later this month to detail their intervention in a bid to fix the municipality.

With just a year to the local government elections‚ the ANC is under immense pressure to fix the municipality‚ which is facing accusations of corruption and poor governance.

After garnering only 49% of the vote in last year’s national elections‚ the party is fighting desperately to win back public confidence‚ or face the very real possibility of losing a second metro to opposition parties who are pulling out all stops to take over City Hall.
