Signal led to cop's arrest over stolen cars

The signal of a stolen vehicle led the police to arrest one of their own when three stolen cars were found in a police officer’s yard.

The police officer appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto on Monday‚ where the case was postponed to May 20 for further investigation.

Colonel Prince Derby‚ 47‚ was arrested in February and faces charges of robbery and theft. The South African Police Service flying squad was on a routine patrol in Eldorado Park‚ south of Johannesburg‚ in February when they picked up the signal that a stolen vehicle was emitting.

They followed the signal to Derby’s home‚ where they found two more stolen cars. The cars included a Volkswagen Golf and a Volkswagen Polo.

Derby was not home at the time‚ and spent a few days on the run after he heard that he was wanted by the police. He was arrested in Hillbrow a few days later.

He is out on bail.
