Communications Minister's R24 000 training to improve image

UNDER-FIRE Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has undergone media training as the government tries to improve the image and presentation skills of the country's top politicians.

Muthambi confirmed that she went through media training at the Sandton-based ABN Training Institute, which is owned by the publishers of Forbes Africa magazine and operators of DStv business news channel CNBC Africa.

Muthambi attended two sessions, which cost nearly R24000, according to a parliamentary reply to a question by DA MP Gavin Davis.

Yesterday, Davis told Sowetan: "I haven't noticed any improvements, I'm afraid."

The ABN Training Institute offers a half-day workshop in a simulated studio, which offers practical and interactive sessions, at which attendees are given TV and radio scenarios to equip them with skills to handle interviews.

Barely six months after her appointment, Muthambi's controversial decision to confirm the appointment of SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng was set aside in October by the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town.

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has undertaken to train newly appointed gaffe-prone politicians, including ministers, their deputies, premiers, mayors and councillors on government communications.

The training also includes that of newly appointed political principals in aspects of government communications, such as handling of the media, according to the GCIS's 2014-2015 annual performance plan.

Several high-ranking politicians have had to make about-turns on controversial statements.

Muthambi's spokesman could not be reached for comment.
