A citywide moment of silence on Thursday marked the beginning of a commemoration ceremony for the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.

Victims' families, city officials and representatives from the city's fire and police departments gathered at the National September 11 Memorial plaza to observe a moment of silence at 8.46 am (1246 GMT), the time the first hijacked plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

At the subsequent ceremony, the names of victims were read aloud as family members held pictures of their loved ones.

The attacks took place on September 11, 2001, when four passenger jets were hijacked and used to target the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, outside Washington.

One of the planes crashed in Pennsylvania, apparently after passengers rose up against the suicide hijackers.

The terrorist attacks killed 2,977 people.
